Although that penalty (charging) is rarely ever called as guys are real good at making sure they don't look like Kurt Browning when they do it while NHL refs are not allowed to make a mistake on any call that's not a hook a hold or a slash.
The Flames getting a power play out of that deal wasn't really the worst thing that could happen. The problem was the Sharks not making the most of their penalty infractions by clubbing somebody.
But then, I don't really blame the Sharks as much as I blame the NHL and their completely inconsistent officiating. Teams with the lead are so afraid to take penalties because not only is the power play only way some teams can score, when you're on a power play, you're a phantom, ticky-tack, they-would-never-call-that-5-on-5 call away from being 3-on-5.
It's because of this that teams like the Sharks work on not taking penalties. So when the time comes where they need to make the most of taking a penalty, they whiff.
And it's partly because of this a team built like the Ducks went completely the other way and made taking hard penalties a part of their game plan, and was able to win it all last year.
