Buzz Up PrintCHICAGO (TICKER) â€"Brian Campbell, the most sought-after defenseman on the free-agent market, and goaltender Cristobal Huet received hefty chunks of change from the Chicago Blackhawks.
On Tuesday, Campbell signed an eight-year contract and Huet inked a four-year pact with the Blackhawks.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN of Canada reported Campbellâ€TMs deal was worth $56.8 million, while Huetâ€TMs contract was worth $5.635 million per year.
â€oeIâ€TMm pretty elated,” Chicago general manager Dale Tallon said of the deals. â€oeItâ€TMs been a long struggle the past few years. This day was always a tough day for us. We worked hard, and to come home empty-handed wasnâ€TMt a very good feeling.”
Campbell, 29, scored eight goals and 62 points in 83 combined games this past season with Buffalo and San Jose. Selected in the sixth round of the 1997 draft by Buffalo, the two-time All-Star has recorded 35 goals and 160 assists in 411 career games with the Sabres and Sharks.
With starting netminder Nikolai Khabibulin having just one year remaining on his contract, the Blackhawks strengthened the position by signing Huet, a native of France.
Last season, Montreal dealt the 32-year-old goaltender to Washington at the February 26 trade deadline, electing to go with rookie Carey Price as their starter.
Huet won 11 of his 13 regular-season starts with the Capitals and appeared in a total of 52 games with Washington and Montreal, going 32-14-6 with two shutouts, a 2.32 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.
A seventh-round pick of Los Angeles in 2001, Huet owns an 83-61-24 record with 17 shutouts and a 2.43 GAA in 183 career games with the Kings, Canadiens and Capitals.
