Sharks fill out coaching staff; Corey Schwab to work with goalies
Posted by David Pollak on July 23rd, 2008 at 2:24 pm | Categorized as General

The Sharks made it official today, naming Trent Yawney, Todd Richards and Jay Woodcroft as assistant coaches for the coming season.

Those names have all been circulating here and elsewhere, but the one real bit of real news in the series of announcements being made today is that Corey Schwab has been hired as the teamâ€TMs goalie development coach. Assistant General Manager Wayne Thomas will continue to work with Sharks goalies at the NHL level, with Schwab â€" most recently a scout and assistant goalie coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning â€" working with prospects at Worcester and elsewhere.

Schwab is the first person hired to work with goalies since the death of Warren Strelow in April 2007. The fact that Schwab was coached by Strelow while in the New Jersey system back in the mid-1990s couldnâ€TMt have hurt his chances when it came to the job in San Jose.

The Sharks also announced that Mike Ricci will serve as a development coach. Translated, that means Ricci will be out on the ice with players while the team is at home, but wonâ€TMt have to travel all season â€" though occasional trips to Worcester are in his future.

If you recall, Ricci was quoted here awhile ago saying that he wasnâ€TMt quite ready to devote the time and energy needed to being a full-fledged assistant coach and preferred, for now at least, to be spending more time with his family. Hence, what looks like a fine compromise.

More later. Time to focus on the print edition.
